My wife, 3 year old son, 5 month old son and I were returning from a working vacation in Orlando, FL. We were working our way through the airport, past shops that stocked space center trinkets and Harry Potter bobbles, when I noticed a group in the center of the promenade carrying American flags. Dressed from head to foot in leather, these bikers were patiently waiting while a steady stream of people were coming out of security.
Suddenly the promenade erupted in applause as a young marine stepped into the room. A look of shock crossed his face as he entered and he did a small jig in a feeble attempt to cover his tears. While everyone in the area had turned to see the commotion, a little fewer than half of the spectators began to applaud. A number of people in the airport looked baffled by the ruckus.
As we go about our daily lives, it is hard to remember that fathers, sons, mothers and daughters are giving their lives in support of our country. Regardless of whether people agree or disagree with our nations policies, there are those that put their lives on the line so that we may live. I have been wearing a red shirt every Friday for nearly two years now, in the hopes that everyone in that terminal will turn to applaud those that serve.
